Fashion From the 2013 Oscars Red Carpet

Dresses, dresses, and more dresses

Dresses, dresses, and more dresses. That's *really* what awards shows are about for me, and the 2013 Academy Awards were no exception. There were very few surprises in the way of awards last night—all four acting awards went the way they were predicted to go, and I was pleased with all four. I have seen all four of those performances and good goodness, they were all exceptional. And Argo, which I still have yet to see, took home—as predicted—the Best Picture trophy, even though Ben Affleck was completely snubbed in the director category. The cast of Les Miserables singing together made me cry. John Travolta's pronounciation of Les Miserables made me cry too. Seth MacFarlane was not Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, but I honestly didn't really care. I laughed at some parts, I cringed at others.

But mostly I just wanted to look at the dresses (and a few of the man looks too—looking at you, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eddie Redmayne).

There were so many good choices in fabrics, colours, and silhouettes last night that I almost don't know where to begin.

The One I'm OBSESSED With

Kelly Ripa win with this one. Gorgeous. Does anyone know who makes this?

The Ones I Loved

Was it a safe choice for Amy Adams? Possibly. But you know what? She looked pretty and elegant—exactly what the Oscars are all about.

I didn't love Jen Lawrence at the Golden Globes but this one was just perfection. Her hair, her jewels, her dress? Lovely.

Not loving Amanda Seyfried's just-had-sex hair, but I love the shape of this dress and I love the halter neckline and I don't know, this one just worked for me.

I just say no to the matchy matchy purple prom shoes, but Jenniger Garner looks gorgeous. And I really, really would like to have her arms.

This one seems to have gotten some mixed reviews, but for me, this new mama looks stunning in this cobalt blue curve-accentuating number.

The One I was Shocked To Have Loved So Much

I am a stickler for fabric choice and I don't think this was a good choice for Zoe Saldana, because of all the waist wrinkling in the cab ride on the way over, but the top of this dress blew my damn mind. It wasn't my favourite dress of the night, but I just loved it so much.

The Good Back/Bad Front In One Dress—mostly due to some ill-positioned dress darts

Anne Hathaway's choice was definitely interesting from behind, but the front was just a little too plain for my taste.

The One I Didn't Love As Much As Everyone Else

I really wanted to love this Jessica Chastain look. And while it was certainly better than The Golden Globes, it just did nothing for me. Maybe it was the colour?

The Not-My-Favourites

I just found Naomi Watts' dress to be a wee bit too robotic-y for my liking, the color and shape were divine.

I am so distracted by Nicole's mid-section. Is that...the Bat signal?

This dress looks straight out of David's Bridal circa 1995. Is that...velvet?
