It's no secret that I loved my son's Allerject units. They're small, which made it easier for him to self-carry them when he was in kindergarten. But since they've had multiple recalls of their products, I admit that my trust in them has been eroded, and my son exclusively carries EpiPens now. He wears one around his waist, but the device is as wide as my son's little back, so it's certainly not very compact or comfortable to carry. AllergyStop® is working to combat that problem with their own compact epinephrine solution.
Not only is AllergyStop® developing smaller auto-injectors, they're taking it one step further by customizing the dosages, too. At the moment, EpiPen devices come in just two dosages: one for "juniors" and one for "adults". The primary concern is that patients weighing less than 15kgs are not properly dosed. AllergyStop aims to create devices with custom needle lengths, and dosages based on body mass index. By making the device palm-sized, they're hoping the convenience of carrying a smaller device will appeal to those who often leave their epinephrine auto-injectors at home.
Quite often, it's teens and young adults who choose not to wear their life-saving epinephrine auto-injectors, because they find them inconvenient and oversized. Having a device that's small enough to fit into a pocket means it's convenient to carry and comfortable for even the smallest patients.
It's good to see more companies entering the epinephrine auto-injector market!
