Doctor Challenges ADHD Stigma

Attention Difference Disorder

Doctor Challenges ADHD Stigma

Dr. Kenny Handelman thinks there is a big misnomer in medical circles. An Oakville-based psychiatrist, Handelman is hoping to change the current lexicon of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) thereby putting a positive spin on what is one of the most common psychiatric childhood conditions.

In a book called Attention Difference Disorder, he strives to debunk some of the myths surrounding ADHD -- namely, that it's caused by too much sugar or gaming, lazy parenting, or kids who "aren't trying hard enough." Handelman stresses the many virtues of children with ADHD, including tremendous creativity, which simply needs to be harnessed. Unfortunately the current medical thinking about ADHD is demoralizing.

"Kids rise to the expectations that we hold for them. At the same time, I believe kids also drop to the low expectations we have for them," says Handelman in an interview with the Toronto Star.

Parents often come to Handelman complaining about the diagnosis. It's not that their kids can't concentrate. Quite the opposite; they can play games for hours. When it comes to paying attention, it's a question of consistency. Exercise, he claims, can lead to vast improvements in controlling hyperactivity and inattention.

"Some parents note that when their ADHD child finishes vigorous exercise, they are calmer and focus better."

Celebrities like comedian Howie Mandel and Olympic gold-medallist Michael Phelps coming out of the ADHD closet also helps destigmatize the condition.

According to Handelman, it's crucial for parents and doctors alike to discuss the condition matter-of-factly, as if talking about a respiratory condition such as asthma.

Mom Loses Kids to Breast Cancer

The Biggest Loser

Mom Loses Kids to Breast Cancer

Talk about adding insult to injury. It's not enough that North Carolina mom Alaina Giordano is battling breast cancer; she's also fighting to retain custody of her children. And losing.

At the end of the summer her kids will move to Chicago to live with their father, Giordano's estranged husband Kane Snyder.

In the press release following the court case, Snyder was described as a "man of principle and a devoted father" who isn't out to rob his children of their mother in a sensational, unprecedented trial, but who simply wants to protect his children from the inevitable loss of their mother.

Of course the whole concept of Father’s Rights is a sticky one, since both parents deserve equal access to their children, but every case -- just like every parent -- is different.

Father’s Rights organizations lead us to believe that men are the ultimate victims of divorce. Not strictly true. In any contentious custody battle, it is the children who suffer most.

On the Facebook page created to support Alaina, the public have openly decried Snyder’s stance by saying, “The day you take two children from a mother with stage four cancer, and consider it a ‘pivotal victory,’ is the day you are an official piece of shit.”

If the judge in this case criticized Alaina for not "nurturing" her children’s relationship with Snyder, it is perhaps worth noting that Snyder walked away from his family for four months without disclosing his location. It's high time fathers like Snyder took responsibility for nurturing their own relationships with their children. In a case as sad as this, there are no winners, only losers.
